If you regularly travel on Clifton Road between North Decatur and Haygood, you may wish to note the following dates when Clifton Road will be either completely or partially closed. The temporary closing is needed because a two level bridge across Clifton Road is planned by Emory as part of construction of the new hospital—called the “J Wing”. Emory wants to connect the old Emory University Hospital with the J Wing, which is slated to be finished soon.
Because of its weight (150,000 pounds) and design, the bridge will have to be constructed in the middle of Clifton Road and then lifted into place by two cranes before being anchored to the existing buildings. During assembly of the bridge, Clifton will be partially closed, and during the time the bridge is to be lifted and installed, Clifton Road in front of the hospital and clinics will be closed for safety reasons.
Please note that the following dates could change depending upon weather conditions and other factors. Emory will post any changes in the closure schedule on the website www.CliftonStreetscape.com .
July 15-17: The two outer lanes will be closed but motorists can use the two inner lanes.
July 18-22: Vehicles may only use the two outer lanes.
July 22-24: No vehicles allowed on Clifton Road from Gambrell Drive to Uppergate Drive. (Bridge will be raised in front of the Hospital/Clinic buildings.)
August-Late Fall: Additional work will be done on the new bridge and may result in some restriction of traffic on Clifton.
In March of 2017, the existing (old) bridge over Clifton Road will be removed. Please be aware that traffic will be difficult along Clifton due to the construction. If you must go down Clifton, allow extra time. Emory’s recommendation is to avoid the construction area if at all possible.
